Summerlin, Las Vegas, and Henderson Nevada
If you have never undergone sedation dentistry, it may be a scary thought at first. However, getting the answers to the following questions should help you feel comfortable and confident with your upcoming procedure.
There are never any wrong questions when it comes to your health, but you can use this guide to help you prepare for your upcoming appointment involving sedation dentistry. During your consultation, feel free to ask your Summerlin sedation dentist, Dr. Matthew Wilson, any other questions that you may have as well.
What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry allows patients to undergo dental procedures while feeling relaxed, and comfortable. The sedation can help a patient with dental anxiety feel calm during his or her procedure.
What type of sedation does Inspire Dental of Summerlin offer?
We offer nitrous oxide, a form of sedation dentistry commonly referred to as “laughing gas,” which is a mild sedation that leaves you awake and alert, but calm and relaxed. We also offer oral sedation that puts you in a bit of a deeper state of relaxation.
At your initial appointment, we will explain to you how the sedation works, what you can expect, and of course answer any questions that you may have regarding your upcoming appointment.
Will I be able to breathe on my own?
Yes. While under the effects of nitrous oxide, you will still be able to breathe on your own. You are only mildly sedated during the procedure, just enough to create a calming experience for you. You will breathe the gas mixture through a mask that is placed over your nose. We keep this mask in place throughout your procedure. With the oral sedative you will also be able to breathe on your own.
Will I need someone to drive me to and from of my appointment?
If taking an oral sedative, yes, you will need to arrange to have someone drive you to and from your appointment. With nitrous oxide, however, you do not need to have a driver. At the conclusion of your appointment, we will remove the mask from your nose. Within minutes you will feel yourself again, and be able to drive home after your appointment.
How long does it take for the effects of sedation to wear off?
Nitrous oxide wears off in mere minutes after your procedure. To do this, we just have you breathe normal air through the mask, and within a few minutes, you will feel normal again. If taking an oral sedative, you may feel a bit drowsy for several hours following your appointment.
Is sedation dentistry safe?
Many studies have been conducted prove sedation dentistry is safe for most healthy patients. Certain forms of sedation dentistry such as laughing gas, have been proven safe even for children. However, remember that your health history, as well as any medications, vitamins or supplements that you take, could play an important factor in your safety if undergoing sedation dentistry. Be sure to discuss these factors with the dentist.
Will the sedation make me feel sick?
Sometimes, although rare, mild nausea is a side effect of sedation dentistry. However, knowing what you should or should not eat (and drink) before the procedure will help reduce the risk of this side effect. You should discuss this concern, as well as any others that you might have with the dentist prior to undergoing sedation dentistry.
Is sedation dentistry right for me?
Sedation dentistry is not for everyone but can help in certain situations. If you experience anxiety while at the dentist, are undergoing a lengthy procedure, have a strong gag reflex, or have a difficult time sitting still for lengthy periods, you may be a candidate for sedation dentistry.
