Root Canal Therapy

Summerlin, Las Vegas, and Henderson Nevada

Root canal therapy is used to save an infected tooth. These occur when bacteria enter the tooth’s chamber, affecting the nerve. Sometimes, extensive decay or a cracked tooth can happen. This is fixed with root canal therapy.

What is a root canal?

A root canal is essentially a deep filling that cleans out the inside of the tooth’s roots, removing any infection. The inside of the tooth houses its nerves and blood supply, which are referred to as the pulp. A root canal involves removing the pulp; thoroughly cleansing the chamber of the tooth; and then filling it with a rubber-like material to prevent the infection from returning.

If root canal therapy is not sought as a form of treatment, bacterial growth can develop and lead to swelling and harm of the jaw structure, intense pain, and the tooth may need to be removed.

What are the signs that a root canal is needed?

Typically, if you have a tooth that needs a root canal, you will be having a great deal of pain. Many times, the pain can be so severe that over-the-counter pain relievers won’t help at all.

Symptoms that a root canal may be in your future include:

  • Severe tooth pain while chewing
  • Your tooth pain wakes you up at night
  • Teeth that are highly sensitive to hot or cold, with the sensitivity lingering for some time
  • Discoloration or darkening of the tooth indicating that the tooth’s nerve has died
  • Swollen gums or an abscess in the area of the infected tooth

Sometimes, a tooth may need a root canal when no pain is present. In these instances, the tooth may be dead due to an injury, is grayish in color, and does not respond to teeth whitening treatment.

What does the treatment involve?

First, your mouth is made numb so that you remain comfortable. Then, an opening in the crown of the tooth is made in order to access the pulp chamber. Once the pulp is removed, the root canals will be cleaned. The tooth’s chamber is then filled with a material called gutta-percha, which seals off the canals from bacteria.

In certain cases, your Las Vegas cosmetic dentist Dr. Matthew Wilson will opt to complete the root canal therapy in multiple visits, and in this case, a temporary filling will be placed to protect the tooth. When you return, the temporary filling will be removed, and the tooth will be prepared for a dental crown, which strengthens the tooth.

Why get a root canal?

Getting a root canal is a good thing. It means that you prevented your tooth from being lost. It means that you saved money  by not having to replace a missing tooth. The procedure has a high success rate and is proof that you caught the infection before it went too far, and that you will be able to save a majority of the tooth’s structure. Not to mention, the results are completely natural, which means no one will be able to tell that you had the procedure done.
